Sassy commercials

What on earth are TV producers thinking? Here is the conversation I had with my 10 year old just last week.

T "Mom what are genital herpes?"

Me with my jaw on the ground "Hum lets look that one up on Wikipedia"

T "OK, great idea"

Me after reading definition "It is a cold sore on your private part, you don't really need to worry about it"

T " I know only adults can get it, do you have it?'

Me as I am about to run out of the room screaming " No honey I don't"

T "Does Dad?"

Me still wanting to run "No"

T "Well that's OK if you did, they make a medicine for it, I saw the commercial on TV"

SERIOUSLY?????

Hahaha. Well, better than "Mom, why is that guy so happy throwing the football through the hole in the tire swing?"
Gotta love the conversation at school. Do your parents have Genital Herpes? Mine don't, I asked.

See, now this is one of those moments that I would have totally dropped the ball. I am such a DORK when it comes to this stuff that I am lucky it doesn't come up more often.

I'm glad to know T is looking out for your welfare and all. Because they DO make a medicine for it now...

Add to that "Bob" and his favorite meds, Tampax, birth control and "intimate" gel and I guess we don't have to worry that they are not getting sex ed at home!

Oh my. I'm speechless. Sonny Ma-Jiminy views the world through eyes that are like information portals. He will ask something like this one day! What do I do?

Oh, look it's all here: Wikipedia, tell the basics, get outta there asap ... I'll be fine.

WIkipedia; great strategy. It stalls for time, keeps things non-emotional, and actually gives you a straight answer. Excellent modelig, Mom! You're a pro!

I just had the conversation about what KY warming jelly is for with my 13yr old. If TV wasn't so entertaining, I might turn it off.

Sheesh, why bother with Noggin when you have perfectly, innocent commercials like Enzyte and Herbal Essence? This is why I pay money for Directv! Tisk, Tisk...
This was hilarious! You are a gifted blogger.

Don't we love it???
Nothing like having to have "The Talk" 3 years before YOU are ready because they saw a COMMERCIAL.
ugh!!

LOL that sounds like a conversation my son and i would have exactly LOL.

oooooohhhhhhh...I dread these days SO bad!!!

Oh noes! That's like when my niece started to read and all the sudden realized what the "WE BARE ALL" billboards meant that she saw everywhere. Leave it to my sister to live off of the only exit for 80 miles to have a strip club. That's a fun conversation too.

The trick is to get them to wait until you've looked it up on Wikapedia for the answer.

Thinking on your feet, and running - multi-tasking expertise!

Ugh. My kids are almost 2 and 4 so those commercials don't register quite yet. My daughter saw a KY commercial by accident and she kinda had a confused look on her face but then she walked away. Thank heavens cause I am not looking forward to those conversations!

Heather said...

Confusion comes crashing down into our living room when the Victoria's Secret angels commercial comes on. Why are the angels in their panties? Do angels really fly around in their panties? What do the boy angels wear?

Oh dear.

ROFL :)
I gotta love the erectile disfunction commercials on the radio where we live.
Thankfully my daughters were too busy talking "Littlest Pet Shop" to hear or worse, ask about it!

A part of me is laughing and a part of me is crying! At least he was satisfied with your answer :)

Oh see, I would have told my 10 year old son that it's what you get when you sleep with skanky girls, so yet another reason to save it until you're in a serious relationship. And then I would have shown him pictures and said "Yep, that'll be down there doesn't it look painful?"

Too funny!!!!

Oh NoWAH! I too know these questions are coming any day now. I can see it in my almost 5-yr-old's eyes. I can see the wheels a-turning. My 7-yr-old shrieks and leaves the room if she sees anyone kissing. She could die RIGHT THEN AND THERE. My 5-yr-old has to go act it out WITH the polly pockets. I find Barbies in interesting positions all over the place. I'm scared.

No more TV.

I know what you're talking about - my son was singing the Viva Viagra song the other day. What a shame!

Unknown said...

Yes ... and they remember those ads, usually when in the supermarket or somewhere else that is very public !!!

HUH-larious.

Since my girls are 6 & 2, thankfully this subject is still over their heads. Or so I thought. A couple of months ago I was spelling "S-E-X" (don't ask why--I can't even remember!) and my eldest goes, "I know what you're spelling, Mommy. Sex." All matter-of-fact like.
Sigh...

LMAO!! WOW... the kids say the darnest things. I have two boys... and am patiently awaiting those days.

love it! "don't worry if you did they have a pill for that" classic!

KatBouska said...

That's IT! No tv. I'm tossing mine today!! My kids are still young enough...they can play with playdough instead. I NEVER want to have that convo...but I like how you digress to wikipedia...I am taking notes here...

Keys to the Magic Travel said...

I knew I needed to stop letting the kids watch tv when my youngest told me that she wanted some sort of special barbie for Christmas...and then told me "batteries not included." She had the whole schpiel down. I have not gotten questions about the meds commercials. I'm thinking they can just watch dvds from now on...

Well, at least he has an inquiring mind....

ROFL!!!! Gotta love Wikipedia and a inquisitive child :)

My 11 yr old asked me what a condom was? I turned 40 shades of purple and tried to explain. And then... how does it work? How do you keep it on? I told him all guy's have to wear one and you staple them on! (Just Kidding)

Wait till you are watching a Vigra ad with your teens and they turn to you with a look of horror on their faces.

Sherri said...

Ugh!!! Don't people know that children are watching --- I especially like the new KY commercials!!

Merrie said...

Yeah, that's just wrong. My six year old has picked up on the word "sex" meaning SOMEthing, but he's not sure what. Just that it's a little taboo.

EmBee said...

Or my personal favorite... Levitra ad, where the guy with ED proudly throws his football directly through the giant hole in the tire swing.

Huzzah Dude! This must mean you've got incredible aim in the bedroom... That is uh, when you can get it up!

Shannon said...

it's totlly crazy what they put on tv as a commercial! How did you keep from laughing when he asked the question about you having it?

Alison said...

Oh boy. I love how he reassured you that it was okay if you did have it. I've got to remember the Wikipedia trick because I know I will have this conversation with my daughter--hopefully later rather than sooner.

This reminds me of watching TV at with my ex-boyfriend's parents. Anytime a viagra, STD, tampon, etc. commercial came on, they'd groan, act all embarrassed and change the channel.
Quite amusing!

Swirl Girl said...

See? This is why we watch Noggin ...no commercials. I guess when they are older (now 4 and 8) we're gonna have to watch Disney channel and they'll ask me what Bratz dollz are.

Soooo not ready for those kind of conversations with my two girls.

Well handled... Those questions aren't easy to answer.

Jacki McHale said...

Note to self, use Wikipedia for the correct answer, I myself would have ran but I guess it's better that you answer then the kids in school, right?

Yikes! Just waiting for the 2 year old to start asking me fun questions... I already told her what boobs were. And she knows naked... sigh...

us moms try really hard to make our homes a haven. A place where our kids can feel safe from the ways of the world.
Then, there we are sitting as a family watching
Dancing with the stars-we love it even though we have to tell them the girls costumes are not excatly approiate for everyday attire-ever!!!
Then=wham, you are slammed with the herpes commercial or some other dumb aduly conversation that you don't want to have with your kids.
Must have been a man with no children, who drives his car too fast through my neighborhood who ok's that commercial to be aired when my child could watch it!
You sir-are the best!
When you have kids, send them over to my house and I will make sure to teack them how to sware very loudly in the middle of church! Ha ha!!

Melanie Dickens said...

Again hilarious. You are good! Wish I could have though of Wikepedia when mine came home from a friends with these questions at 11. The mom had let her watch Meet the Fockers!! Oh it was so much fun.

Gotta love TV. Watching it with your parents is almost as bad...

Being medically minded I tend to tell too much as my hubby puts it. I am gonna take some pointers from you so I do not continually traumatize my daughter when she asks a question. Although the idea that this is what happens when you sleep with Skanky individuals is not such a bad idea.......
Another HIT!!!!

Lauren said...

Thank goodness my daughter is 2 and doesn't yet understand those oh-so-embarrassing commercials just yet. I look forward to that day.... =/

Is this what I have to look forward to??? Yikes!! I do believe you handled it veeeery smooth!

Loving your blog! SITS girl here!

We're just entering this arena. The other day we drove by a billboard for a plastic surgery/spa type place. My 4-year old son asked, "Mom, why isn't that woman wearing any clothes?"

And so she wasn't. She's laying on her stomach with just a wisp of fabric covering her behind.

All I could say was, "I don't know dear. I don't know.

Karen said...

I can relate!
I made my 11 year old keep covering her head with the blanket whenever the male enhancement commercial came on. These commercials were during one of the Indiana Jones movies on TV.
Guess they didn't think of the little kids watching!!

Anonymous said...

Can I just say... niiiiiice! I bet you can't wait to explain what "Viva Viagra" means!

Connie said...

It seems like those commercials start right about dinner time and don't stop till ... let say ... breakfast!
;)

Michelle said...

Oh how I love Tivo! I never watch live tv (except football, of course). Here's hoping my children never do either! I soooo don't want to have to deal with a conversation like that! (still from SITS)

Rhea said...

My boys have come to me with similar questions after seeing commercials. Why do they have these on the kids' channels? Who is their target audience? Scary.

Great post! Good idea to use Wiki. We look up EVERYTHING on the Internet these days.

Unknown said...

I would imagine you get the same commercials as we do in Canada...same networks...anyhow...have you seen the latest Monistat one...the grumbly vaginas...Ya that one has been met with some strange comments form my kids.

Jen said...

nice to know what I have to look forward too. it is always surprising and funny what comes out of my kids mouths.

Lex the mom said...

Between those commercials, feminine itch & femenine hygeine ones & the ED commercials, I have to keep my feet firmly planted with all the questions, too!

Hoorah for us sticking it out & doing the right thing - as much as we can explain, anyhow. Heh.
