What have I done?

Here it is my first blog, not my very first blog but my first one here.

I know I have fans out there that have been dying for me to do my first post. They have been checking daily and wondering what my first subject will be.

Will it be about Seth taking his shoes off at school because he loves me? (Yeah don’t quite get that one either, but I will take it!) Or about Tony and the fact that he can watch the same show about tornados over and over and over! It has gotten so bad we broke down and got a TV in the boy’s room! Yes I broke my own rules however one can only watch so many shows about tornados, the result is the same..destruction!

Well…..my first post is about me and my obsession with the two most wonderful men in the whole world, Ben and Jerry! I have been a huge fan of theirs since I had my first bite of Chocolate chip cookie Dough ice cream over 20 years ago, crap I am old!

I will never forget the first bite, PURE HEAVEN!! What I truly thought was THE BEST thing about it was you could eat right out of the container; it is a single serving right? Through out the years I have had my fair share of the their heavenly concoctions from Cherry Garcia, Chunky Monkey, Phsih Food, New York Super Fudge Chunk and the list goes on and on! Today something happened that HAS NEVER happened during my 20 year affair, it is so horrible that I must start from the beginning….

This afternoon after work I came home and announced to Seth that we were going to the grocery store. After about 30 minutes of chasing him down and bribing him with the car cart (anyone who has used these knows how much fun they are to control)I got him out the door.

I fill my cart with the necessities and head for the ice cream isle to get my fix. Seth decides he wants to pick it out. WHAT???? OH NO YOU DON’T!!! OK I am not that mean and I did not say that out loud, I let him choose. After reading all of them to him he decided on Mint Cookie, a flavor I have never tried. He throws it in the cart and we are on our merry way.

After dinner is over it is time for the special ice cream. I reach into the cupboard to grab 2 bowls and stop in my tracks, bowls? For Ben and Jerry’s? What? That is when it hit me! My affair is over, the cats out of the bag the kids are now going to ask for MY Ben and Jerry’s every time we go to the store, what I have done?

If you are getting the impression that I never share my Ben and Jerry’s you are correct, NEVER do I share! Didn’t I learn my lesson with Starbucks? How could I? Then the WORST PART OF IT ALL was to have to actually use an ice cream scoop and put it in 2 bowls, oh that killed me!!!

The boys enjoyed their precious ice cream and Seth went to bed. Then Tony and I grabbed the container and 2 spoons and finished it off right out of the container, the way the ice cream gods meant it to be!

They make locks for pints of ice cream; guess what I am ordering tonight?

Hilarious. I've graduated from Ben and Jerry's to Dove. I might have to revisit B&J. You know they have an ice cream shop on Purdue's campus? Might be worth looking into sending your boys to Purdue.

You have to tell us where to find those locks. That is brilliant and I've never seen one!

SHUT YOUR FRONT DOOR! They make a gadget for everything!

Ahhh. Ben and Jerry memories... I remember when Jerry Garcia died. We drove into San Francisco where his music was playing everywhere. People were crying in the streets... The shops starting passing out 'Cherry Garcia' ice cream!... It didn't fee commercial.. It was beautiful somehow! People started smiling as they ate their B and J:)

John Deere Mom said...

Can you imagine if they sold B&J in gallons. I, for one, would still feel the need to eat it ALL at one sitting out of the container. Oh, and Phish Food?! Food of the gods.

Givinya De Elba said...

They sell LOCKS?!? Wow.

Mmm-mmmm, you've made me hungry.

we now have a ben and jerry's in toronto! YAY! what is your fav. flavour...welcome to sits!

We visit B/J when vacationing in Gatlinburg... It is worth the drive!

LOCKS?!?!?! FOR ICECREAM!?!?!? That is hysterical!!!
You so need that now!! yep. better order two to be safe.

Love the lock! My 7 year old would pick right through it! I don't usually waste my time with a pint, I go straight for the Quart size of Chocolate Almond. I don't think B/J makes that flavor. Delicious post!

I had this same love affair, but now I am cheating on B&J with the chocolate devotion in the Cold Stone Creamery. My husband has even learned not to interrupt me during my private time with CSC lol

OMG! I SO needed those ice cream locks 20 years ago (yeah, I'm THAT old too) when I had my obsession with Ben and Jerry's...and so did my roomates. I would be so excited to come home and dig into my carton of Chubby Hubby only to find that Chubby Roomy beat me to my only indulgence in life and crammed every last bite into her pie hole. Not that I'm bitter or anything. Ok, maybe I am. I clearly have pent up anger. I think I should seek therapy. I'll buy a carton of Ben and Jerry's on the way home. Oh, didn't I tell you? They are my therapists too.

Phish Food rocks!

I feel the same about Girl Scout's Thin Mint Cookies. I'm very protective of who get a cookie and how many they get. I often eat them in secret so no one sees them and remembers we have them... Do they make locks for cookie boxes?

Acrimony said...

LOCKS?! HAhahahaah! That's freaking awesome!

I once had an affair with Nestle's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Straight out of the tube baby. It's over now though. Might have to rekindle that love though today! Dang it.

And I had to laugh about the Starbuck's too! TOTALLY should have never EVER introduced that to the kiddos. Ever.

Ben & Jerry's were responsible for another one of my 'American's eat really weird things' moments..

American friend .. 'Here, try this Chunky Monkey, it's really good.'

Me .. 'No thanks, I don't eat monkey.'

Was relieved to find out they were offering me icecream and not chunks of monkey stew. Been hooked on it ever since ... B& J that is :-)

Jess NBP said...

HAHAHA!!! B&J.. never tried them but since u mention two of my favorite flavors period. I just might. funny, creativ writting. wonderful.

A lock? I must get one immediately!

My daughter will tell my husband, "You can't eat that- it's mommy's special cream." Then she turns right around and says, "Can I have some?"

NO!

I love ice cream so much I blog as Ice Cream Mama!

I am so totally getting one of those locks!

That is GREAT!

i knew i should have stopped at the ice cream freezer yesterday. how will i go the day without my two men?

KatBouska said...

Where can we get those locks!?! I'll take 7...one for each day of the week.

I can't believe they make locks!!!

I need to try some other flavors...I get stuck on Phish Food and Americone Dream (cuz I LOVE Stephen Colbert).

That's why I buy my kids those giant $3.00 buckets of ice cream made out of sugar and sawdust, then I can keep the B & J all for myself, explaining to them that "bigger is so much better..."

And you MUST try s'mores. There's a toasted marshmallow ribbon in it, and these little pockets of graham cracker crumbs that are like treasures you pick through the ice cream to find. It use to be called "Marsha, Marsha Marshmallow", which I thought much more endearing than "s'mores"--but that's probably all the recumbant bovine growth hormone in me talking....

Is that lock for real??? I soooo need one of those! I do not share either, hehehe!!!

Anonymous said...

Chubby Hubby. Need I say more.

Sherri said...

Ben and Jerry can't be yours --- they are MINE!!! Just kidding --- I am right here with you!!

EmBee said...

Oh are you serious??? You think that pitiful thing you call a 'lock' could separate me from my 'Chunky Monkey'??? I'd simply turn the tub upside down and slice the bottom off with my butcher knife.

Puhleeeze, don't mess with the master!

Merrie said...

OMG -- You're me! I was horrified when the kids discovered the ice cream, and now we do the bowls for them (and me, if they're still awake.) But a carton of Coffee Heath Bar Crunch all to myself...that's a little bit of heaven right there.

Shannon said...

locks...seriously....i had no idea

Alison said...

Oh the horror of having to share your special treat! For me it is a bag of Dove chocolate that I hide in the top shelf of the pantry.

Chocolate Fudge Brownie check in right here! LOVE IT. Damn you, I must go abandon all that is good and run to the nearest store for B&J's!!

Ah, grocery store car carts. Actually, I prefer them to Target's ridiculous sextuplet cart that no mom can control and no kid can resist! Every time I go in Target I see a mom trying to talk her kid out of it!

Last time I was Giant Eagle, I saw Ben and Jerry's has these MINI ice cream containers (like, 4 for $5) that would be perfect kid sizes! If you can find them, maybe the kids can pick out their own mini's and you can get your pint. :)

It's good to admit that you have an obsession. That is the first step to recovering. Not that u want to, I am just saying.
As for sharing, I am with u sister. My kids get the crappy, store brand. They don't care. As long as there is sugar in it and it's cold and creamy they are good to go.
So-know that you are not alone-and I too will be getting one of those locks!! YOu can never be to careful!

There really are things in a "Mom's" life that are sacred and her obsession with say ice cream is it.
Mine is my Pibb from McDonald's - yes it is a Dr pepper knock off but I love it and if those kids even get that glint in their eye to try it I go bezurk!!!
I love the idea of a lock for ice cream.
When we were little my dad loved Pepsi. To hide it and keep it cool he used to keep it in the toilet tank. We never could find it and believe me we looked. Then one day the toilet would not stop flushing and there was dad's stash, the beloved Pepsi was found.
So we all have to do what we have to, to have some things that are truly ours.

They make locks?!?!? I am soooo buying one of those. Hands off my Phish Food!!

Too funny! I hide my favorite flavor (S'mores) in an old frozen veggies bag in the freezer. Otherwise my hubby would eat it all!

Who would they lock out me or the kids? Do they make them adult proof?

Tricia said...

I grew up 15 minutes away from the Ben & Jerry's factory and eating their ice cream makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, like taking a trip home.

Never got into Ben & Jerry (kinky!) but you'd never know it from my midsection ... guess it says I love all kinds of trouble! ;)

Chubby Hubby all the way! I don't buy it often, but just happen to have a little tiny bit left in my fudge brownie from my birthday. Not for long!

Michelle said...

Mmmmm, when I was in high school, I used to each the cookie dough and eat almost all the vanilla first so that there were giant chunks of dough left with just enough vanilla surrounding them to make them creamy. Sadly, I have not had B&J in years and years and years. I may have to go buy a single serving one tomorrow. Screw healthy eating!

Oh and I LOVE the lock! Good luck with not sharing... hopeless though that may be.

(and yes, still SITS)

Rhea said...

ice cream locks?! No way!! I would feel like such a glutton buying one of those. lol

Here in Texas we love our Blue Bell Ice Cream. I can't eat anything else. :o)

Julie said...

Have you seen they've recently come out with B&J's bite size containers for .99c. They even have a spoon under the lid, just open and eat.

But, okay, they are a little small.

Do you know if those locks are still available...need to check it out...too funny!
